Knowing that being present with my family was going to be number one when choosing my next full time job I decided that I would get back into education. The schedule is perfect for me to still be available for rides, vacations and even half days with the kids. The timing may seem off as education seems to be an exhausting and tedious job during a pandemic, but it was where I was called to go, so I accepted.
I started my para educator journey about three months ago in a high school, working mainly with freshman, sophomores and juniors. It has been so rewarding and I truly love it. There are many challenges but the most important part of working with students is working on creating a relationship with them, establishing trust and showing them that they do matter, they are smart and someone does hear and see them.
I have written down some great conversations that usually leave me laughing, and that is what my tales of a para educator will be about as well as the other parts. I look forward to sharing this journey with you and look forward to hearing about your journey whether you are a student, parent and/or educator/staff.

Random Conversations
Student: If I pass out don’t wake me up
Me: Did you not sleep well last night?
Student: It’s been a long week
Me: It’s Monday
Student: Exactly
Me: I feel ya kid, I totally get it.
A little back story, the teacher was talking about homework that is due Monday. Today is Thursday so they have plenty of time to complete it. Some students were groaning about how they shouldn’t have homework because they have to be in school all day.
Me: I know it’s so tough (sarcasm) but you realize that when you finish school you’ll have to work?
Student: no I’m going to marry a rich man.
Me: you just set women back so far.
Another Student: ok then I’ll be a stay at home mom that way I can sleep in every morning.
Me: Stay at home moms do not sleep in, they work hard and are always up with the kids.
Another Student: ok well I’m going to be a stay at home dog mom then.
We are watching a short video about solar ovens and this one women said she’s been using hers since the 1980’s….
Student- wow that’s a really long time.
Another Student- that was like 40 years ago. (I might have felt personally attacked)
